This post is my genesis. My permission.
To just begin where I am.
I cannot influence without creating, and I cannot create without starting. So this is my start.
Just do the work.
If you want to BE a writer, then write.
If you want to BE a Filmmaker then make films.
I have felt this inner pull towards content creation like blogging and making videos for years, like there’s a message inside, that I must get out. But, I’ve almost entirely neglected actually doing anything about it until now.
“What would I say?”
“Who am I to write anything?”
“I don’t know anything worth sharing!”
So go the endless, voiceless thoughts seeping across my mind, dulling any impulse towards creative action.
This calls to mind a book I read, but until now, did not act on. It’s called Do The Work! by Steven Pressfield.
He talks about this insidious force called Resistance that immediately arrays itself against you the minute you decide to undertake a positive change or action in your life.
Do you feel called to write, paint, dance, make music, film or any other creative art? Resistance will try to stop you.
Do you want to launch a new business or other venture? Resistance will sabotage you at every turn.
Do you want to start a diet and exercise program? Resistance will entice you with the snooze button and delicious foods.
He says about Resistance, “Any act that rejects immediate gratification in favor of long-term growth, health or integrity, […] any of these acts will elicit Resistance.
So what does Resistance look like?
Fear. Self Doubt. Procrastination. Addiction. Distraction. Timidity. Ego and Narcissism. Self loathing. Perfectionism.
I have always longed to live my life with passion. To create meaningful things and to make the most of the one life I’ve been given. But I’ve let Resistance smother my spark and haven’t mounted a counter-resistance to conquer it and succeed in my goals.
Pressfield says, “Fear saps passion. When we conquer our fears, we discover a boundless, bottomless, inexhaustible well of passion.”
So face your fears and clear a path for your passion to march down.
I’ll close this post with a quote that is on the inside of the book jacket of Do The Work!
On the field of the Self stand a Knight and a Dragon.
You are the knight.
Resistance is the dragon.
Conquer the dragon. Not later. Now.
Write. Film. Edit. Compose.
Your life depends on it.
And dear reader, I didn’t write this for you. I wrote it for me.
But if it helps you start your thing too, then take it!
The world needs more starters and doers.
Just do the thing.
Do it well.
Or do it poorly.
But just do it.
